Cognitive Development

Cognitive development refers to the range of skills that help a child understand the world, think, learn, memorize, pay attention and solve problems. These skills develop gradually through play, exploration, interactions with others and everyday experiences.

The stages of cognitive development

0 to 3 years old

  • Starting in their first years of life, the child discovers the world by exploring their environment. They gradually develop the ability to solve minor everyday problems through trial and error and by adapting their actions based on outcomes.
  • The child gradually develops their memory and attention skills. They recognize familiar people, objects and routines, and then gradually become able to voluntarily focus their attention on an activity for short periods of time.
  • The child begins to compare objects based on their colour, shape, size or quantity. They gradually develop a basic understanding of quantities and often begin to recite numbers in order.

  • The child gradually becomes more skilled at solving minor problems. They try different strategies, learn to change their approach when it doesn’t work and gradually understand that the same problem can sometimes have multiple solutions.

  • The child learns to recognize, reproduce and extend simple logical sequences. They classify objects according to different criteria and develop their knowledge of shapes, sizes, spatial relationships and numbers.
  • They gradually develop a deeper understanding of quantities, become more efficient at counting and learn to understand the meaning of numbers.

  • The child consolidates their understanding of numbers, develops different calculation strategies and becomes more skilled at solving minor problems.
  • Their memory, attention and visuospatial skills continue to develop, allowing them to perform increasingly complex tasks.

The ages presented are approximative. Each young adult develops at their own pace, and different skills often emerge simultaneously. The different areas of development (language, motor, cognitive and socio-emotional) influence each other. It is the young adult’s overall progress and development that is important, rather than reaching a specific stage at a particular age.
